Who is Haig?

Haig Kargayan is a Los Angeles based Surrealist artist. Born in Aleppo Syria in 1954, at a young age he attended the Sarian Academy of Art in Aleppo and years later become the winner of the prestigious Fabriano and Makhoul Awards. Like many artists, he started his career in traditional painting, originally working predominantly in the medium of pencils and later evolved to include oil, acrylic, synthetic and natural dyes, and other mixed media. While pursuing his bachelors degree, Haig started making architectural scale models which evolved in to a full time career in the early years of his life.

In 1984 amid the Lebanese Civil war, Haig emigrated to the United States where he established and continued the family business in skill screening. After several decades in the industry, in 2017 he decided to turn his life long passion for the arts into a full time profession. True to the Surrealist movement, Haig channels deep in to the unconscious mind to bring to life, through vibrant imagery, the chaos of emotions tied to human experiences and the realities of current events. His works heavily draw upon the everyday realities of the two worlds he has been part of, mid-east and west, war and peace. In each of his paintings Haig employs a variety of techniques and materials symbolic of surrealism but one uniquely his own. In recent years Haig has displayed his work at exhibits hosted by Tufenkian Fine art gallery (2019), AACA charity benefit (2019) and in a number of private shows.
